Topological superconducting phases in disordered quantum wires with strong spin-orbit coupling

چکیده
Zeeman fields can drive semiconductor quantum wires with strong spin-orbit coupling and in proximity to s-wave superconductors into a topological phase which supports end Majorana fermions and offers an attractive platform for realizing topological quantum information processing. Here, we investigate how potential disorder affects the topological phase by a combination of analytical and numerical approaches. Most prominently, we find that the robustness of the topological phase against disorder depends sensitively and nonmonotonously on the Zeeman field applied to the wire.

Majorana zero modes in one-dimensional quantum wires without long-ranged superconducting order
We show that long-ranged superconducting order is not necessary to guarantee the existence of Majorana fermion zero modes at the ends of a quantum wire. We formulate a concrete model, which applies, for instance, to a semiconducting quantum wire with strong spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting coupled to a wire with algebraically decaying superconducting fluctuations. We solve this model by...

We theoretically demonstrate the interplay of uniform spin-orbit coupling and uniform Zeeman magnetic field on the topological properties of one-dimensional double well nano wire which is known as Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. The system in the absence of Zeeman magnetic field and presence of uniform spin-orbit coupling exhibits topologically trivial/non–trivial insulator depending on the h...

متن کاملSpin-orbit qubit on a multiferroic insulator in a superconducting resonator
We propose a spin-orbit qubit in a nanowire quantum dot on the surface of a multiferroic insulator with a cycloidal spiral magnetic order. The spiral exchange field from the multiferroic insulator causes an inhomogeneous Zeeman-like interaction on the electron spin in the quantum dot, producing a spin-orbit qubit. The absence of an external magnetic field benefits the integration of such a spin...
متن کاملTopological Anderson insulator in three dimensions.
We show that disorder, when sufficiently strong, can transform an ordinary metal with strong spin-orbit coupling into a strong topological "Anderson" insulator, a new topological phase of quantum matter in three dimensions characterized by disordered insulating bulk and topologically protected conducting surface states.
